Counselling Focus Area 1

Chronic Pain

Chronic Pain brings hundreds of people to therapy every week. What is chronic pain? It is pain lasting for at least 3 months on a near daily basis. It does not go away even if you have been treated for the medical condition or pain. It can be derived from many things such as a traumatic injury, surgery, or another medical condition such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, or an infection.

Stress creates natural responses in the body – the nervous system will activate a response to deal with stress. Our nervous system is built to focus on what is the most important. Those who have experienced trauma are hyper-sensitive to their surroundings and potential triggers. Through counselling, we hope to reduce the suffering and not add to the individuals stress response.

Through trauma counselling we will focus on your repetitive patterns of defensive actions, and help move you from fight, flight, and freeze responses. Furthermore, we will work with the way the client feels from their experience. With a focus on their memories and how they respond to situations. We work collaboratively to build a positive self-regard.

Motor Vehicle Accidents

We understand that a client’s mental health can be impacted by a collision and that this can be a traumatic event. We offer counselling services to help you manage this trauma, work through your pain, and assist you in any way you may need. Our Counsellor offers a CBT approach towards trauma and pain and will work closely with your physiotherapist, chiropractor, and RMT to make sure you are receiving well rounded care for your overall well-being.

Our Counselling Approach

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Counselling focuses on your needs and helping you to take control of your pain as a way to improve your health and quality of life. Through a CBT approach you become the leader of your care. Our counseller works with you to identify what support and services might help your chronic pain. Our sessions consist of 50 minute one-to-one with a focus on your journey and wellbeing.

CBT is a form of talk therapy that helps people identify and develop skills to change negative thoughts and behaviours. CBT says that individuals – not outside situations and events – create their own experiences – PAIN INCLUDED. By changing their negative thoughts and behaviours, people can change their awareness of pain and develop better coping skills, even if the actual level of pain stays the same. CBT helps provide pain relief in a few ways:

You work with us in one to one virtual sessions from the comfort of your so you are in a familiar and relaxed environment. You learn self-management skills and tools to decrease pain and improve your quality of life. You learn about the complex nature of chronic pain and how it affects both your physical and emotional wellbeing. You can get this in conjunction to your physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Depending on your needs we may refer you for further services and healthcare providers.
